Depending what type of animals you're in search of, there are different countries to hit up. Most visit Africa in search of the "Big Five" in their natural habitat- the buffalo, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos, oh my. Kenya's Masai Mara reserve in Eastern Africa is a very popular destination for its unspoiled authenticity, as well Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic landscape home to over 30,000 animals. South Africa has some standout options as well like Johannesburg and Cape Town, but are known for being a little more touristy.
Know Before You Go
In addition to a passport, most African countries require a visa and/or immunizations. For example, Kenya requires a visa obtained from the US Embassy and proof of a yellow fever vaccine. Malaria is quite common and easily caught via mosquitoes. Preventative measures you can take to protect yourself include anti-malaria treatments, nets and bug spray. Check the State Department website for tips and advice on your specific destination well in advance of leaving.

Interesting! I hope that everyone had a great Presidents' Day and I hope that they are having a great George Washington's birthday!
The first thing you need to plan on, or at least I do, is winning the lottery! I would guess even a non-luxury safari is easily 10 grand per person. Inherited wealth or a very generous benefactor might be other avenues :-)
Camping safari caters for budget travelers, for the young and the adventurous. However, age is not a criterion, all that is needed is a sense of humor, a willingness to participate and a spirit of adventure.
We provide authentic adventures in the African bush with nothing between you and the animals at night apart from a sheet of canvas and the embers of a dying fire. Another advantage of this safari is that you will probably find yourself with travelers from the Four Corners of the world. As one writer wrote "If you go to Africa without sleeping under canvas or walking in Game Country, you've only been on Holiday NOT on a safari".
Safari covers all the Tourist Attraction Areas (Parks and Reserves as well Santuaries) Nairobi National Park, Aberdares, Mt Kenya, Samburu, Rift Valley Lakes Nakuru, Naivasha, Baringo and Bogoria, the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo West, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro crater and Tsavo East. On Safari our Tour Guide drives ensure our clients explore all the parks in their itinerary, targeting the Big Five and other Flora and Fauna.
So what are the costs? I realize there are variations but a general figure might be helpful. You also have to factor in the cost of a flight--and that alone is going to be quite a hefty sum. While it sounds like a great thing to do, it looks way beyond anything I could even dream of.
Hi Joe,
The costs starts from $360 for the 3 days Safari going onwards depending on the number of days you are willing to spend in Kenya. 3 days safari could be in destinations like Maasai mara, Amboseli, we have the 4 days safari, 5 days safari, 6 days to 12 days safari.
Thanks for the info. $360 for three days is far less than I would have dreamed!
Thanks for the advice, although i want to get to see the wildlife i like the idea of the luxury tented campsites. We hadn't considered the requirement for a visa yet so that's definately something to add to the list if we do choose Kenya as our safari destination.
I am too surprised by the cost of this, it looks really affordable. I would also agree that staying in a hotel would not be like a proper safari and to really get the feel you need to stay under canvas, I cant imagine what it must sound like at night, amazing!

great info on Travel to Africa, it would also be imperative to inform the clients the best times to travel to Africa and why. For example, between end June to October a Kenyan safari will be preferable as this is when there are large herds of wildebeest.
